Did you ever climb a trail up a high mountain? As you struggled up you looked forward th the big thrill of reaching the peak. When you reached the very top, how glad you were to be there! You could look for miles over valleys and mountains. The cooling winds made the hard climb to the top worth while. There, soaring in the clouds was an eagle, making use of every wind current to float aloft. Wasn't that a thrill you will never forget?
Climbing the trail to Eagle Rank is like climbing a mountain When you became a Tenderfoot Scout, you have already climbed the first steep step of the trail. In learning about the ideals of Scouting, taking part in Patrol, Troop and community activities, and in learning a few simple skills, you have opened the dore to wider opportunities and outdoor adventures.
-- Handbook for Boys. 5th ed. 1948.

Many things in Scouting have changed since it began in 1911. One constant hase been the desire of Scouts to earn the Eagle Rank. Over almost 100 year, less than 2 percent of Scouts reach this point. Today, the Eagle Trail starts with the Scout Rank, Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class. From this midpoint, the trail continues to Star, Life and finally, Eagle. By the time a Scout reaches the Eagle Rank, he will have earned at least 21 Merit Badges.
