Cub Scouting is the Boy Scouts of America's program for boys in the first through fifth grades. In the middle of the fifth grade, a boy is eligible to become a Boy Scout. The goals of Cub Scouting include: Influencing the development and character and to encourage spiritual growth; developing habits and attitudes of good citizenship; encouraging good sportsmanship and pride in growing strong in mind and body; improving understanding within the family and neighbors; strengthening the ability to get along with other boys and to resect other people; fostering a sense of personal achievement by developing new interests and skills; showing how to be helpful and to do one's best; providing fun and exciting new things to do; and preparing them to become Boy Scouts. The boys are organized into units called "Dens" which are based upon their year in school. Each Den is made up of about 8 boys and their families. Two parents volunteer to be Den Leaders and the others support the Den Leader by attending on a rotating basis to assist in the activities. Last year, our Cub Scouts went on outings to such fun places as Northwestern football games, model railroad clubs, basketball games, fire stations, a hayride, and even a three day long camping trip. The Cub Scout program includes a Resident Camp in the summer and family camping trips. Fifth graders may go camping once a month. Troop 16 directly operates three Cub Scout Packs in Evanston as part of its "Family of Scouting" concept. Pack 16, formed in 1936, is Evanston's first and only continuously operating Cub Scout Pack. It meets at Oakton School. For more information contact Chuck Carrington. Pack 18 meets at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church. It was first organized in 1949 and is Evanston's first Roman Catholic youth program. For information contact Chris Hersee. Pack 32 meets at Dawes School and is Evanston's largest Cub Scout organization. It was started in 1954. For more information contact Curlee Adams. |
